Formation of the Department of African American Studies

program_subAs of January 2016, African American studies has been established as a full-fledged department within the UCI School of Humanities, headed by Bridget Cooks, associate professor and director of the program, and now inaugural chair of the Department in African American Studies. UCI is now aligned with other UC campuses and national peer institutions with developed African American studies departments and establishes parity with related units at UCI that also began as interdisciplinary programs, including the departments of Asian American studies, Chicano/Latino studies, and gender and sexuality studies.
