UCI Institute for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: First in Class 

Now in its tenth year, the purpose of the Institute is to build capacity to advance UCI’s enduring commitment to inclusive excellence. By bringing together stakeholders to review goals, metrics and strategies for inclusive excellence, the program is designed to improve coordination, communication and collaboration to fortify student success in all of our academic programs.

The theme of this year’s program is “First in Class”. This theme refers to one of the four major pillars of the recently launched UCI’s strategic plan entitled Bright Past. Brilliant Future. Broadening participation in our undergraduate and graduate programs drives our role as a public land grant research university, proudly educating talented young people from the state, country and world. Indeed, last fall the New York Times College Access Index ranked UCI #1 in the nation for economic diversity. This past February, the US Department of Education classified UCI as a Minority Serving Institution under the Asian American Native American and Pacific Islander Serving Institution designation. We are the only AAU member campus so designated. In 2018 UCI will join UCSB as the only two member campuses designated as Hispanic Serving Institutions.
