Dear Anteater Community,

The 2016-17 “What Matters to Me and Why” Alumni Series recently began with an insightful talk by Joy Avedesian ’00. We would like to thank those who attended and invite those who could not attend to view videos from this event and other past talks here.

The series continues Tuesday, Jan. 24, with a talk from Jermaine Griggs ’05. This informal, conversational dinner series explores how student experiences have profoundly impacted career paths and life journeys of some of UCI’s many distinguished alumni.

Jermaine Griggs is a minister, musician, entrepreneur and public speaker. Born and raised in Long Beach, he earned his bachelor’s degree in social ecology from UCI in 2005. At the age of 16, he launched Hear and Play Music, an online music instruction company. Nearly 15 years later, his hobby-turned-business draws more than 2 million downloads every year. His success has allowed him to give back to his community and support more than a dozen charities including Mentors International, Rady’s Children’s Hospital, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Boy Scouts of America. As a result of his success at a young age, Griggs was featured on Aetna’s “African American Innovators” and named to MSN’s “Top 10 Superstars Under 30” alongside notables such as Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. He also has appeared on television shows on MSNBC and HGTV. He is currently a board member of UCI’s Alumni Association.

“What Matters to Me and Why” encourages reflection about values, beliefs and motivations in the lives of those who shape our university. The series explores personal journeys – choices made, difficulties encountered, commitments formed and joys revealed – with the hope that these stories will help us to understand diverse pathways in life, work and leadership. Such understandings are crucial for fortifying tolerance, strengthening bonds, and supporting the virtues that make UCI a great institution.

We are pleased to offer this series in collaboration with the Student Alumni Association, a registered campus organization that enhances the student experience at UCI by connecting students to one another, alumni and the university.

We encourage you to join us Jan. 24. Please complete the event registration form to register.
