Facilitator: Rachel McLaren, PhD

•Are you confused about when to say “yes” and “no” to other people’s requests?
•Do you often say “yes” to requests without realizing the impact that response will have on your time and productivity?
•Do you find yourself feeling angry and resentful during the academic year because you’ve said “yes” too often?

You’re not alone! Many faculty (pre and post-tenure) find it incredibly difficult to sort out when, why and how to say “NO.”

In this webinar, you will learn:

•The biggest mistakes faculty make in responding to requests

•How to identify and disrupt problematic patterns

•Our favorite strategies that you can implement immediately so you can add “no” to your vocabulary

About the Facilitator

Rachel McLaren, PhD, is a professor at the University of Iowa. Her research focuses on interpersonal communication in families, romantic relationships, and friendships. Specifically, she examines issues related to emotions, conflict, and how people make sense of and talk about difficult experiences in their relationships. Rachel’s current work examines hurt feelings between parents and adolescents.

Rachel teaches undergraduate courses in the areas of conflict, small group communication, and issues in relationships that are typically considered problematic or dysfunctional. She teaches graduate courses on theory as well as the intersection of communication, cognition, and emotion. Rachel works hard to squeeze the most out of her work hours so she can enjoy time with her husband, 3-year old daughter, 1-year old son, and two dogs. She enjoys hosting get-togethers at her home, working out, reading fiction, and using technology to keep in touch with her friends and family that live far away.

Rachel is also a Faculty Success Program Coach and a certified Campus Workshop Facilitator for the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity. Rachel’s participation in the Faculty Success Program transformed her connection to her work and writing and resulted in explosive productivity, reduced stress, and more work-life balance. If you would like to invite Rachel to give a workshop on your campus, contact our campus workshop coordinator: Ruben Jimenez (Ruben@FacultyDiversity.org).[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
