Dear Campus Community,

The Office of Inclusive Excellence is launching a new YouTube Channel entitled Spotlight Series. The purpose of this series is to explore and raise awareness about issues that affect our campus and wider society, including anti-Semitism, gender equity, free speech, and immigration among others.

The topic of the first installment is Islamophobia or fear of Islam and Muslim people. I explore this topic with UCI student Aya Hallak, an international studies major and participant in the Olive Tree Initiative.

You are also invited to a special guest lecture by Reza Aslan, Author of the New York Times Bestseller, Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth.

     Date: Tuesday, May 2
     Time: 6 – 8 p.m.
     Location: Irvine Barclay Theatre

Dr. Aslan’s talk, Fear Inc. Confronting Islamophobia in America, will explore the nature of prejudice and strategies to counter bias and hate in our time.

Tickets are free for UCI students, staff, and faculty with valid UCI identification. RSVP soon; reservations close on Monday, May 1 at 12:00 p.m.

I look forward to seeing you at this important event.

Douglas M. Haynes, Vice Provost for Academic Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
