The UCI School of Education has been awarded a five-year, $2.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to expand and enhance its teacher preparation programs. “The goal of our Master of Arts in Teaching and undergraduate CalTeach credentials is to help meet the state’s need for effective educators,” says Richard Arum, dean of the School of Education and principal investigator. The 14-month MAT program offers two credentials in single multiple subjects. Students who complete the single subject program are qualified to teach mathematics, social science, English language arts, sciences, music, art, Spanish or French at the middle school or high school level. Multiple subject graduates are prepared to teach all grade levels and content areas within the elementary school curriculum. The CalTeach program provides undergraduate students the opportunity to complete majors in math, chemistry, biology, physics or earth sciences, while simultaneously earning a California K-12 teaching credential, all within a standard four-year timeline.
