A Message from Assistant Vice Chancellor Rameen Talesh | Chauvin Guilty Verdict & Campus Resources ♥ ✚

Dear Anteaters, Today we learned the verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial on the murder of George Floyd. I encourage you to reach out to one another and be there for each other as we all process this outcome. If…

A Message from Chancellor Gillman | Today’s Guilty Verdict in the Chauvin Trial ♥

A year ago, after we had all seen the video of George Floyd’s killing, I wrote to all of you, saying that “We watched with shock and horror the video of a white policeman callously, even casually, kneeling on the neck of an unarmed and unresisting black man until that man was dead, while other policemen stood by and watched.” I said that “This brutal and racist act was like something out of Mississippi during Jim Crow, out of a past we don’t acknowledge enough, but it wasn’t. It is our reality, in the here and now, a reality that…

Daunte Wright – A Death in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota ♥ ★ ✚

Dear campus community, Daunte Wright joins a lengthening and disheartening list of unarmed Black people who have been killed in police custody. The time and place may be different, but the conclusion is the same: another life is taken. This loss, like others, ripples through an ocean of grieving families, friends and communities. The survivors are doomed to live with the absence of a brother, father, nephew and friend. Each day they must find a way to reconcile their memories of him with the knowledge of the terrifying final moments of his life. The sense of unresolved trauma only deepens….

Drake, M.D., issued the following statement today (April 13): “Sunday’s killing of Daunte Wright is yet another senseless tragedy that tears at our hearts and reopens deep wounds. Even as Americans follow the murder trial of Derek Chauvin, this latest horror vividly conjures the trauma and heartbreak of the killing of George Floyd just a few miles away. UCI End Racism Initiative

End Racism Initiative | Recognizing Black Excellence | A message from Director Michael A. Yassa, Ph.D. ♥ ★ ✚

Dear colleagues, Today marks the beginning of Black History Month, a federally recognized celebration of the numerous contributions Black and African Americans have made, and continue to make to this country. It is also a time to solemnly reflect on the continued struggle for racial equity and justice. The events of the past year have been particularly historic in this struggle. Police brutality and the murders of George Floyd and others, the disproportionate deaths and jobs lost from the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the display of white supremacy and the violent attacks on the U.S. Capitol are constant reminders…

UCI Black Thriving Initiative Update ♥ ★✚

We are in the third month of the UCI Black Thriving Initiative. National awareness is growing.
