Abstract

Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial group in the United States and the largest concentration of Vietnamese living outside of Vietnam resides in Southern California. Their  experiences during the war in Vietnam and their turbulent journey as refugees and immigrants have contributed to the complexities of their health care. The Vietnamese American Oral History Project (VAOHP) at UC Irvine was initiated to understand the experiences of a community that has endured the psychological and physical impact of a civil war, displacement, escape, and resettlement by creating a forum for them to tell their stories and have them shared with the public. For interviewees, including both medical practitioners and patients, the telling of their history acts as a narrative healing. Moreover, these stories are for the public to understand the nuances of how this diverse population approaches health and healing.
