Dear Colleagues,![]() We are pleased to announce that UCI will host the 2016 World Indigenous Law Conference. This is the first time this biennual conference has ever been held in North America. The conference is an international forum aimed at gathering Indigenous lawyers, practitioners, academics and those interested in furthering their understanding of issues facing Indigenous Peoples. Key elements of this conference include an international discourse on Indigenous Peoples’ Jurisprudence: examining legal frameworks and strategies for self-determined futures. The UCI community is invited to register and attend.
Speakers:Keynotes and presentations from renowned legal scholars, lawyers, judges, wisdom keepers, community leaders, and philosophers, including: • Walter Echohawk, Sr. (Pawnee), attorney, author, legal expert and visionary for the rights of Indigenous Peoples and nations • Joshua Creamer (Wannyi / Kalkadoon), Barrister-in-law specializing in Native title • Naomi Lanoi (Masaai), human rights advocate • Deborah Sanchez (Chumash/O’odham), first elected Native American judge to the Superior Court in Los Angeles, California • Abby Abinanti (Yurok), tribal judge and attorney, previously a Superior Court Commissioner for over 17 years • Beverly Jacobs (Mohawk), legal scholar, lawyer, and community leader • Oren Lyons (Onondaga Nation), Faithkeeper • Chase Iron Eyes (Standing Rock Sioux), attorney, Water Protectors at Standing Rock, and candidate for United States Congress • Aura Benilda Tegria Cristancho (Colombian U’wa), attorney, Association U’wa Speakers are subject to change.
