Join us on Tuesday, November 12 for ENGENDERING RESISTANCE, an art installation by Sé Sullivan, Ph.D. and the inaugural dialogue between two scholars, Sullivan and Karl Bryant, Ph.D., who shared a childhood experience.

Bryant and Sullivan were childhood research subjects at UCLA’s Gender Identity Research Clinic (1963-1994) where Dr. Richard Green (1936-2019) included them as part of his research on “gender identity disorders.” Both Bryant and Sullivan only discovered the extent of the research produced on them in adulthood. Now, their work turns the lens of analysis on the doctors who studied them as children.

This is the story of one child’s experience at UCLA’s Gender Research Clinic and their resistance to the enforced practices of conversion therapy. Sullivan began this project as an autoethnographic exploration that developed into a Ph.D. thesis. During their research they made a ground-breaking discovery: In the restricted boxes of the Robert Stoller Papers at UCLA was the 1970 file that included a transcribed 68-page oral interrogation of Sullivan as an eight-year-old being seen at the school’s Gender Identity Research Clinic. “This file, file number 24,” Sullivan writes, “is a historical document and record of my body as a site of data collection.”
