Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read, and spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. This year the UCI Libraries’ are amplifying Banned Books Week to focus on books written by POC (People of Color) authors.

This year the UCI Libraries’ invites you to participate in a social media campaign during Banned Books Week. Readers will have the opportunity to share a video of themselves reading a selected passage from a Banned Book on UCI Libraries’ social media accounts.

All UCI students, faculty and staff to are invited to participate in the Banned Books Week. Access to books seen on the UCI Libraries’ Banned Books Virtual Book Display is available only to UCI affiliates.

UCI Alumni and community members are also invited to join. To obtain a copy of the books, check with your local public library or you may purchase copies at your local bookstore.

To participate, please fill out this Google Form. Book selections are limited and participants will be selected on a first come, first served basis. If you are selected as a participant, you will be assigned a passage from a book on our Banned Book list and receive instructions on how to film the video using your smartphone. Videos must be submitted no later than Friday, September 18 at 5 p.m.
