Are you working on social justice-related research? Seeking a platform to present your work? Are you interested in learning about graduate school?

The Department of Criminology, Law & Society (CLS) at the University of California, Irvine invites you to our third annual Social Justice Research Symposium on May 25th. We are seeking highly motivated students who wish to present their research and explore further education post-graduation. This symposium is open to all undergraduate and master’s students with interests in social justice and doctoral-level research, and particularly welcomes students who belong to minority groups underrepresented in doctoral-level programs.

The SJRS symposium is an excellent opportunity to learn more about pursuing graduate school. During this day-long event, students will explore the opportunities and benefits of graduate education, engage in discussions about social justice research, and receive advice from CLS doctoral students and faculty about preparing competitive graduate applications. We will answer all your questions about graduate school and what you can do to make yourself a dynamic candidate.

The SJRS committee actively seeks student participation in our break out sessions where students will have the opportunity to share their work in roundtable style session. Participants will receive feedback from faculty and doctoral students on how to build upon their work in the upcoming year. Don’t have work to present? Not to worry. These sessions will be open to students who wish to sit in and listen to their peers present. We invite applications from students in any field whose work speaks to social justice related issues. In order to apply to participate, please submit the attached application form. The symposium experience will help students build their resume or CV, gain experience presenting and providing feedback on research, and provide a networking opportunity for prospective graduate students. Participants will be exposed to our faculty’s cutting-edge research on social justice issues, including immigration, policing, social movements, anti-discrimination law, public health disparities, implicit bias, solitary confinement and prison administration, and local community-based politics.

If you would like to participate as a student presenter, please submit the attached application by April 23rd, 2018. Accepted participants will be notified by May 4th, 2018.

Even if you do not have a research project to present, you may still register for our event and participate in various workshops and panels. Simply indicate that you would like to register as a non-presenting participant on the form below. Please RSVP here by May 11th if you wish to attend as a non-presenter: https://cls.soceco.uci.edu/webforms/rsvp-2018-social-justice-research-symposium

If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Sora Han at sora.han@uci.edu or Justin Strong at jdstrong@uci.edu.  We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

SJRS planning committee
