Join the UCI Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing Center for Nursing Philosophy for a presentation by Chancellor’s Professor of UC Irvine African American Studies Department Frank B. Wilderson III titled “Confusing moral judgment with ethical assessment in addressing racial conflict.”

About the presentation

“It is common for Anglo-Americans to confuse moral judgment with ethical assessment. We often use the terms interchangeably, as though they mean the same thing when, in point of fact, we are really speaking of the former (moral judgment).

We lack the vocabulary or the training to comprehend, much less deploy, a lens of interpretation predicated on ethical dilemmas. The implications for this confusion have debilitating impacts on the way racial conflicts, in general, and anti-Black antagonisms, in particular, are addressed, in all contexts, including health contexts.

A violence of optimism clouds our vision and feeds the frustration of Black people writ large.”

Dr. Dawn Bounds, PhD, PMHNP-BC, assistant professor in the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing and Miriam Bender, PhD, RN, the director of the Center for Nursing Philosophy, will lead a discussion and Q&A session with Dr. Wilderson after his lecture.
