Abstract: This talk explores the challenges and possibilities of cross-racial solidarity through an ethnographic account of a community-based educational space (CBES) working with low-income Southeast Asian American and Black youth. CBESs can play a unique role in teaching youth to engage in anti-racist work and building cross-racial coalitions. This CBES focused on challenging anti-black racism, arguing that freedom for Southeast Asians was linked to freedom for Black people. We argue that attention to challenging anti-Blackness is central to cross-racial coalitions but should also recognize the distinct nature of anti-Asian racism.
Bio: Stacey J. Lee is the Frederick Erickson Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation Professor of Educational Policy Studies and the Associate Dean for Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of Unraveling the Model Minority: Listening to Asian American Youth & Up Against Whiteness: Race, School, and Immigrant Youth. Her new book (written with three graduate students), Resisting Asian American Invisibility: The Politics of Race and Education, will be published in the Fall of 2022 by Teachers College Press.
