Dear Colleagues,

On November 2, the Initiative to End Family Violence will host Sheldon Kennedy, a former NHL player who overcame sexual abuse by a coach to become an advocate for victims of abuse around the world.

Kennedy will lead a discussion following the screening of Swift Current, the documentary featuring his story. Leading researchers in law, neuroscience, and epigenetics will then present their work on helping child victims of sexual abuse recover from trauma

3:00-5:00 p.m. — Prof. Warren Binford, Dr. Paul Arnold, and Dr. Frank MacMaster present their research: Interfacing Law, Neuroscience, and Epigenetics to Support Childhood Sexual Abuse Victims in the 21st Century

This event is approved for 4.25 hours of Minimum Continuing Legal Education Credit by the State Bar of California. UC Irvine School of Law is a State Bar-approved MCLE provider.

Panelists Include:

SHELDON KENNEDY
played for the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames, and courageously charged his Major Junior Hockey League coach with sexual assault.

 

W. WARREN BINFORD
is Director of Willamette University’s Clinical Law Program and a Professor of Law. She has actively worked throughout her career as a child advocate.  
PAUL D ARNOLD
is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and Director of the Mathison Centre
for Mental Health Research Education at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute.
FRANK MACMASTER
of the Child and Adolescent Imaging Research Program in the Alberta Children’s Hospital, uses neuroimaging to diagnose mental disorders.
