Seminar Series:

“Fostering Civic Advocacy on Campus”

Monday, May 20, 2019
12:00pm – 1:00pm
Calit2 Auditorium

Speaker(s): (1) Dave Min, J.D. (2) Candice Taylor, M.D. (3) Miryha Runnerstrom, Ph.D.,

Abstract:
Civic advocacy is to engage with those in power to improve the lives of those who are marginalized either by race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and other characteristics taking into consideration their views in decision-making. This process involves developing knowledge, skills, values, and motivations to make a difference at individual, local, institutional and policy levels.

Biography:
Panelists: (1) Dave Min, J.D. is Professor of Law and a nationally-recognized expert on economic policy who has fought to protect and strengthen economic opportunity for working Americans for nearly two decades. A first-generation Korean-American, Dave worked as an enforcement attorney at the Securities and Exchange Commission, as an economic and financial policy advisor to Senator Chuck Schumer, and as an economic policy director at the Center for American Progress. (2) Candice Taylor, M.D. is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics whose current research broadly addresses the health needs of low-income and minority communities. It seeks to identify norms for early-life physical activity and to evaluate associations between responsive parenting and play. She is the founding director of the Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Action Group of Orange County, an initiative whose collaborators include the Children and Families Commission of Orange County, the Orange County Health Care Agency and MOMS Orange County. She also initiated a monthly weight-management clinic for children and adolescents that she directs at the UC Irvine Health family health centers in Santa Ana and Anaheim. (3) Miryha Runnerstrom, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Program of Public Health, where she teaches courses on environmental quality and health, climate change and disaster management, health and global environmental change, and public health and wellness. Her research interests include behavioral and environmental influences on health and well-being, the scholarship of teaching and learning, as well as how rapid global environmental changes are affecting the health of the world’s populations.
