Identity through Movement: Dance and Social Justice Frameworks

Featuring Waeli Wang’s Skin We Wrought

The AAPI Womxn in Leadership and Academic & Professional Women of UCI would like to invite you to Identity Through Movement: Dance and Social Justice Frameworks on Friday, August 14th to discuss Skin We Wrought by Waeli Wang.

Please join us as Krystal Matsuyama-Tsai (MFA ‘20) leads a discussion with Waeli Wang (MFA ‘19, Visiting Assistant Professor at University of Kansas Theatre & Dance Department) and engages attendees in a thoughtful discussion of her work. We look forward to sharing space with you and connecting through this powerful work. This event is designed as a community space to share reactions and dive into themes that will expand our conversation and thinking. It is not intended to be an academic discussion. Though this event is hosted by the AAPI Womxn in Leadership Initiative, all are welcome.

More about Skin We Wrought
Interweaving visceral contemporary dance movement, spoken word, and experimental film projections, Skin We Wrought contemplates how identity can be negotiated and performed. This embodied performance explores themes of silence, assimilation, resilience, and community through a series of vignettes. The work is inspired by Asian American heritage sourced from a diverse range of movement and imagery, figurative and abstract, and the poetic personal to explore current socio-political contexts. Skin We Wrought was created in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of California, Irvine and premiered in 2019.
