Abstract: Based on a recent nationally representative dataset from China (N = 7419), this study adds new evidence to the literature on parental absence by identifying the differential impacts of living with both parents, mother-only, father-only, or no parents on a range of adolescents’ (13-15 years old) developmental outcomes in rural China. Estimates, from fixed effects models with rich controls and additional propensity score matching analysis, suggest that children living in father-only households are the most disadvantaged in academic and emotional outcomes, more so than children with no parental presence. We also explored possible explanations for such differences and found suggestive evidence that disparity in parenting practices and parent-child relationships considerably explain the negative effects associated with living in father-only households.
