Dear Anteater Community,

The 2017-18 “What Matters to Me and Why” Alumni Series kicked off with an engaging talk by Dion Shepherd Jr., M.A.S. ’16. Thank you to those who joined us for this special event. If you were unable to attend, we invite you to view videos from this event and other past talks here.

The series continues Thursday, Jan. 25 with guest speaker Dr. Nikan Khatibi ’04. This informal, conversational dinner series explores how student experiences have profoundly impacted career paths and life journeys of some of UCI’s many distinguished alumni.

Dr. Nikan Khatibi is a physician anesthesiologist and pain management and addiction medicine specialist. He is currently the chief executive officer and medical director for Ahura Healthcare Corporation which owns and operates a chain of pain management and addiction medicine medical offices in Southern California. He also serves on the board of directors for CalOptima, the largest county-organized healthcare system in California.

An astute health scholar and leader, Dr. Khatibi has authored 30 journal articles focusing on traumatic brain injury, stroke, and targeted gene medication therapy, especially for those battling with chronic pain. He has received several prestigious awards for his work and has been named to OC METRO’s ‘Top 40 Under 40’. In 2017, Dr. Khatibi was named a Fellow by the National Association of Corporate Directors. He also serves as a clinical instructor for the UC Riverside School of Medicine and serves on the Dean’s Leadership Council at the UC Irvine.

“What Matters to Me and Why” encourages reflection about values, beliefs and motivations in the lives of those who shape our university. The series explores personal journeys – choices made, difficulties encountered, commitments formed and joys revealed – with the hope that these stories will help us to understand diverse pathways in life, work and leadership. Such understandings are crucial for fortifying tolerance, strengthening bonds, and supporting the virtues that make UCI a great institution.

We are pleased to offer this series in collaboration with the Student Alumni Association, a registered campus organization that enhances the student experience at UCI by connecting students to one another, alumni and the university.

We encourage you to join us Jan. 25. Please complete the event registration form to register.

With warm regards,
