Dear Students and Colleagues,

The “What Matters to Me and Why” series of informal discussions with respected members of our campus community has enjoyed remarkable success. Capacity audiences of students, faculty and staff continue to report glowing reviews, including for our most recent speaker, Dreamers Coordinator Ana Miriam Barragan. We would like to thank those who attended and encourage you to attend a future event.

The series continues Wednesday, Jan. 11, with a talk by Dr. Kenneth Chang. Dr. Chang is a board-certified UC Irvine Health internist and gastroenterologist who specializes in interventional endoscopy and gastrointestinal disorders. His clinical research focuses on the development of endoscopic modalities for cancer diagnosis, staging and therapy. He has pioneered the development of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration and injection. Dr. Chang completed his medical degree and residency at Brown University. He then finished a fellowship at UC Irvine Medical Center and the School of Medicine, where he has been a faculty member for more than 25 years. He is also the director of the UC Irvine Health H.H. Chao Comprehensive Digestive Disease Center and the School of Medicine’s chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

“What Matters to Me and Why” encourages reflection about values, beliefs and motivations in the lives of those who shape our university. The series explores personal journeys – choices made, difficulties encountered, commitments formed and joys revealed – with the hope that these stories will help us to understand diverse pathways in life, work and leadership. Such understandings are crucial for fortifying tolerance, strengthening bonds, and supporting the virtues that make UCI a great institution.

We encourage you to join us Jan. 11 to hear Dr. Chang’s individual journey and unique perspectives. Please visit www.chancellor.uci.edu/whatmatters to register for the event.

Please check the website or posters on campus for the schedule of speakers.
