Dear Students and Colleagues,

The “What Matters to Me and Why” series of informal discussions with respected members of our campus community has enjoyed remarkable success. Capacity audiences of students, faculty and staff continue to report glowing reviews.

The series continues Wednesday, Feb. 8, with a talk by Andrea Tenner. Tenner is a professor of molecular biology & biochemistry and of neurobiology & behavior in the School of Biological Sciences and professor of pathology in the School of Medicine. A major focus of her laboratory is on the fundamental processes with which the immune response and subsequent inflammation influence the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Recipient of numerous accolades over her career, she is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was honored with the Daniel G. Aldrich Jr. Distinguished University Service Award in 2015. Tenner has previously served as the director of UCI MIND and as equity advisor and later as associate dean for research in the School of Biological Sciences. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University of Dallas and a Ph.D. in biological sciences from UC San Diego.

“What Matters to Me and Why” encourages reflection about values, beliefs and motivations in the lives of those who shape our university. The series explores personal journeys – choices made, difficulties encountered, commitments formed and joys revealed – with the hope that these stories will help us to understand diverse pathways in life, work and leadership. Such understandings are crucial for fortifying tolerance, strengthening bonds, and supporting the virtues that make UCI a great institution.

We encourage you to join us Feb. 8 to hear Professor Tenner’s individual journey and unique perspectives. Please visit www.chancellor.uci.edu/whatmatters to register for the event.

Please check the website or posters on campus for the schedule of speakers.
