The Mentoring for Achievement and Excellence program will celebrate mentors at UCI, including graduate student, postdoctoral scholar and faculty recipients of the Tom Angell Fellowship which memorializes the wellness and retention efforts of UCI Graduate Counselor Tom Angell. Additional awards will recognize faculty leaders from DECADE Mentors and Equity Advisors, as well as other mentoring achievements at UCI. Review all event details at: https://inclusion.uci.edu/recognition/.
As you well know, mentoring is a powerful vehicle for building and sustaining inclusive excellence at UCI. It opens the campus to a truly broad range of faculty, staff and students. The person-to-person transmission of experience, skill and knowledge scaffolds their success. Their growth enriches our diverse campus community while advancing our mission as a public research university.
It is our wish that this event will also be an occasion to raise awareness about the value of mentoring, share best practices, and draw attention to exemplary mentoring across campus.
Award-winning journalist, author, and philanthropist Soledad O’Brien will keynote at the Mentoring for Achievement and Excellence program at 2 p.m. PT on Tuesday, March 9. Ms. O’Brien’s virtual presentation on “Mentoring for Leadership” kicks off this year’s signature program to recognize the exemplary mentoring efforts of students, faculty, and staff. This event is co-sponsored by the Office of Inclusive Excellence, Division of Finance and Administration, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, Office of Information Technology, and Division of Student Affairs.
Soledad O’Brien currently anchors and produces the Hearst Television political magazine program Matter of Fact with Soledad O’Brien, distributed by Sony Pictures. She also reports regularly for HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.
A former anchor on MSNBC and on NBC’s Today show and NBC Nightly News, Ms. O’Brien anchored the CNN documentary unit, creating the innovative In America documentary series: Black in America and Latino in America. She also has hosted projects across a range of networks, including serving as a special correspondent on Al Jazeera America’s news program, America Tonight.
Ms. O’Brien brings her powerful worldview to examine mentoring during the challenging time of and moving beyond the current pandemic. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Ms. O’Brien and her husband, Brad, created the PowHerful Foundation to help young women get to and through college. The foundation also hosts conferences to support mentoring for college and career.
