Pilot Awards Funding: Two UNIQUE Opportunities Related to Health Disparities

The National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIH/NIMHD) has funded 9 unique Centers for Multiple Chronic Diseases Associated with Health Disparities (P50). Two of these Centers are here in Southern California:

  1. UCLA-UCI Center for Eliminating Cardiometabolic Disparities in Multi-Ethnic Populations (UC END-DISPARITIES)
    PIs: Arleen Brown (UCLA), Bernadette Boden-Albala (UCI), and Keith Norris (UCLA)
  2. Southern California Center for Chronic Health Disparities in Latino Children and Families
    P.I. Michael Goran (Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles)

As part of these collaboration, UCI investigators are eligible to apply for their newest pilot projects (see two RFAs attached).

These are two unique and separate funding opportunities [Submitted projects must be unique].

Please notice the tight timeframe!

Below are described some of the differences between the two different opportunities:

Applications are being accepted for one-year to two-year Pilot-Project Awards of up to 40,000 per year (up to $80,000 over 2 years) for the project period commencing 7/1/2022.

Projects must aim to engage multiethnic populations in research and to eliminate disparities in cardiometabolic conditions in communities across Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

Projects that include the following will be prioritized:

  1. Preliminary research that will lead to multilevel interventions and mechanistic approaches to promote the prevention, treatment, and management of multiple chronic conditions;
  2. Measurement of, and data harmonization for, social determinants of health;
  3. Safety net interventions for medically underserved patients in real-world settings; and
  4. Projects that leverage or supplement the UC END-DISPARITIES Center’s current R01-type research projects (see website).

Health topics include but are not limited to:

  • Hypertension
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic kidney disease

Prioritization given to investigators who are:

The Southern California Center for Chronic Health Disparities in Latino Children and Families

Applications are being accepted for one-year Pilot-Project Awards of up to $50,000 in direct costs. A second-year renewal may be applied for, depending on the progress of original award activities.

Projects aim to understand and address health disparities among Latinos.
