This summer the UCI Graduate Division is proud to launch a series of summer talks highlighting the stories, experiences, and voices of UCI’s brown and black graduate alumni. We are honored to host these speakers and share their stories with our #UCIGradAlum community and beyond. We encourage you to join us each month and bring a friend from your own UCI network.

Dr. Alma Zaragoza Petty ’16 will make her return to UCI to share some important lessons, tips, and experiences she’s learned through several critical personal and professional transitions since leaving UCI. As a Latina, a mom, a wife, an academic, an entrepreneur, her journey has already been multi-faceted and robust. Like so many today, she has had to reconcile hard life facts and find new and unexpected answers. In this session, she is going to share the junctures she encountered and where they led her.


Alma Zaragoza Petty, PhD ’16 is a performance-minded applied researcher skilled in organizational monitoring, evaluation, and learning. Results-focused in program strategy, development, and impact, Dr. Zaragoza Petty serves as a Research and Evaluation Manager and as a Senior College Advisor for ScholarMatch. 

However, it is her work as a consultant on projects focused on everything from talent development to justice, equity, diversity & inclusion, and program management support and training for various organizations. These include TogetherLA, Open Doors Podcast, Prickly Pear Collective, and many more. In 2017, Dr. Zaragoza Petty was the co-creator of the Red Couch Podcast with Propaganda and Alma, to discuss and breakdown salient issues and important topics of the day. Following her time at UCI, she taught on Oppression and Privilege and Theories of Learning at Chapman College as an Adjunct Professor. Dr. Zaragoza Petty remains dedicated to her mission to serve those who come after her and seek a higher education through the development of her own non-profit to serve and prepare marginalized populations for higher education. Dr. Zaragoza Petty completed her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from UCLA, her Master’s degree from California State University, Northridge in Counseling, and her Doctorate in Education from UC Irvine.
