Dear colleagues,

The UCI Shakespeare Center and UCI Law are hosting a mock trial based on “The Merchant of Venice.” In Shakespeare’s controversial play, Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, takes Antonio, a Christian merchant, to court for failing to meet the terms of their loan. He demands the pound of flesh promised to him in their contract. The court rules against Shylock, allowing him neither to accept additional funds nor get his original principal back. Instead, he is deprived of control over his assets and forced to convert to Christianity. In our trial, Shylock appeals his case. Shylock will be represented by L. Song Richardson (Dean, UCI Law), and the People will be represented by Erwin Chemerinsky (Dean, Berkeley Law).

When: Tuesday, October 29 | 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

Where: Irvine Barclay Theatre

The Trial is free, but tickets have all been reserved; the wait list is still open. Due to high demand, we are livestreaming the event. We will also screen the video and discuss the trial on Friday, November 1 at 12:00 p.m.
