Dear students and colleagues,

You are invited to attend the “Great Debate” 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, in Emerald Bay AB, UCI Student Center, featuring students from the newly formed UCI Speech and Debate Club. Six students will face off in pairs to debate three hot topics:

  • “Should the government prioritize welfare over infrastructure?” Daniel Gilchrist, sophomore, Biological Sciences vs. Kimo Gandall, freshman, Political Science
  • “Should the United States enforce compulsory voting in presidential elections?” Berna Idriz, vice-president, Speech and Debate Club; freshman, Political Science vs. Reece Disney, freshman, Political Science
  • “Which is better for Americans, decriminalization of all drugs, or legalization of all drugs?” Metta Beshay, president, UCI Speech and Debate Club; freshman, Biological Sciences vs. Hana Schlosser, freshman, Biomedical Engineering

The “Great Debates Series” is designed to develop proactive, informed, and conscientious citizens and future leaders, by providing a forum for respectful and substantive discussion of contentious issues in today’s world. The series will exemplify civil discourse within our campus community through organized debates. The topics selected for debate will be relevant and interesting for students, staff and faculty. A post-debate reception will follow the event, so participants can delve deeper into the topic, explore communication styles, or simply enjoy good conversation.
