UCI will host a planning meeting with faculty and graduate students from across the UCs to form a consortium focused on the research and teaching of Early American and U.S. Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality History. These are among the most vibrant academic fields in the social sciences and humanities. The University of California system–with its unusually large number of faculty who specialize in these fields–is a key engine behind this vibrancy. Some scholars are housed in UC History Departments, and many others work in interdisciplinary programs or departments such as Ethnic Studies, Feminist, Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, Law, and Social Sciences. Yet, the UC system does not have a standing mechanism yet for regularly bringing together scholars working in this area, along with the students whom they are training. Those of us teaching and researching the history of American women, gender, and sexuality feel a renewed sense of urgency for collaboration and collective expression given the current political context, which underscores the persistent power of patriarchy, misogyny, and racism in U.S. society.
