Dear Anteater Community,

On June 1, UCI students will launch the “What Matters to Me and Why: Students Series,” an exciting new project for dialogue and discussion. It is part of the campus climate council’s initiative that seeks to promote inclusion by bringing people together. A signature program is the “What Matters to Me and Why” series. Open to all undergraduates, the new series will provide a venue for exploring life stuff: the values, beliefs and motivations that drive our individual journeys.

The series begins Wednesday, June 1, with a dialogue between student-athletes Arden Davis and Alex Young, facilitated by Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Life & Leadership and Dean of Students Rameen Talesh.

UCI junior and Women’s Volleyball libero, Arden Davis was named an All-Big West honorable mention selection in 2014 after recording 515 digs which ranks seventh in the UCI single-season list. She led the Big West Conference with a 4.44 dig average as a sophomore. Davis posted a career-high 34 digs in a win against UC Santa Barbara, tying UCI’s No.4 single-match mark. She is a Big West Scholar-Athlete majoring in business administration. She is one of five UCI student-athletes featured with University Librarian Lorelei Tanji in the UCI Libraries’ Zot Smarter campaign.

Senior point guard Alex Young is the first player in UCI Men’s Basketball history to record at least 1,000 points, 500 assists and 500 rebounds in a career. He was named Big West co-Freshman of the year in 2013. Young was named an All-Big West honorable mention selection in 2014 and in 2015, when UCI won the program’s first Big West Conference Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time. The sociology major will be graduating in June.

“What Matters to Me and Why” encourages reflection about values, beliefs and motivations in the lives of those who shape our university. The series explores personal journeys – choices made, difficulties encountered, commitments formed and joys revealed – with the hope that these stories will help us to understand diverse pathways in life, work and leadership. Such understandings are crucial for fortifying tolerance, strengthening bonds, and supporting the virtues that make UCI a great institution.

We encourage all undergraduates to join us to hear Arden’s and Alex’s individual journeys and unique perspectives. Please complete the event registration form to register.
