Recent attacks on houses of worship are tragic reminders about the violent incidents that stem from ideological extremism. You are invited to hear about emerging research and ways to take action from UCI faculty at Confronting Extremism Talks at 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. on April 3.

What: Confronting Extremism Talks

Where: Little Theatre (building 601 on the UCI campus map)

Faculty presenters were supported through a Provost Initiative on Understanding and Engaging with Extremism and will examine diverse topics that range from countering science denialism to defending the denial of human rights. These talks are engaging, informative, and evidence-based.

Presenters/topics:

Michele Goodwin, Chancellor’s Professor of Law in the School of Law, on “What Society Do We Want to Be?”

Sidney Golub, professor emeritus in the School of Medicine and the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center, on “The Denial of Science – Stem Cells” (project lead: Aileen Anderson, director of the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center)

Julia Lupton, associate dean and professor of English in the School of Humanities, on “The Virtuous Table” (project co-lead: Yong Chen, professor of history and associate dean for curriculum and student services, School of Humanities)

William Maurer, professor of anthropology and law, and dean of the School of Social Sciences, on “Digital Extremism – Understanding the Alt-right’s Digital Toolkit” (project co-lead: Paul Dourish, Chancellor’s Professor of Informatics and associate dean for research, Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences)

Terrance Mayes, chief diversity officer and associate vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion in the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences, on “Bridging the Gap between Medical and Nursing Education and the LGBTQ+ Community” (project lead: Ellena Peterson, professor of pathology and associate dean of admissions and outreach, College of Medicine)

David Pan, professor of German and chair of European languages and studies, on “Challenging Liberal Order” 

The event is free and open to the public with seating on a first-come, first-served basis. Refreshments and swag bags will be provided.
