Managing Multiple Roles: How to be a Faculty Member and an Administrator

Pursuing an administrative career can be appealing because it offers faculty members opportunities to become leaders, to expand their range of influence, to increase their marketability, to advance their careers, and to improve their income. Regardless of how one obtains a leadership position, it is increasingly important for most administrators to stay active in their fields. This is particularly essential for those who get appointed to administrative posts prior to earning the rank of full professor who wish to be promoted. It may be important to more senior scholars as well – as most faculty members entered the profession due to a love of their own discipline. This webinar will provide information on how to maintain a research agenda while holding an administrative position. We will talk about the realities of managing multiple roles, the changes in the demands on one’s time as an administrator, strategies for being a successful administrator and continuing one’s academic pursuits. The webinar will draw on the academic literature on faculty productivity, the career life cycle, and work/family demands. It will also draw on the experience of the webinar leader and webinar attendees as a means of sharing perspective and strategies.
