February 17, 2016 Dear Colleagues, I want to bring to your attention a new inclusive excellence resource entitled Guidelines for Addressing Race and Gender Equity in Academic Programs in Compliance with Proposition 209. Sakina Ibrahim,  Master of Fine Arts 2014 alumnus of the University of California, Irvine, has been nominated for the 47th Annual NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work Instructional for her first book, self-published in June 2015, Big Words to Little Me: Advice to the Younger Self. Sakina utilizes the book’s message to facilitate empowerment workshops with schools and organizations. Formation of the Department of African American Studies

As of January 2016, African American studies has been established as a full-fledged department within the UCI School of Humanities, headed by Bridget Cooks, associate professor and director of the program, and now inaugural chair of the Department in African American Studies. UCI is now aligned with other UC campuses and national peer institutions with developed African American studies departments and establishes parity with related units at UCI that also began as interdisciplinary programs, including the departments of Asian American studies, Chicano/Latino studies, and gender and sexuality studies.
