An Equity Advisor (EA) is a Senate faculty member at the equivalent of the associate or full professor rank who is appointed by the Office of Inclusive Excellence to advance community building and offer faculty support through education, attention to equity concerns, and resource development. These activities will promote the success of all faculty, including those who have not historically been afforded equal opportunity in higher education.

OIE Senate Faculty Recruitment Best Practices for Open, Fair, and Inclusively Excellent Searches

Equity Advisor Changes, 2025-2026

Since its inception as part of a 2001 NSF ADVANCE grant, the Equity Advisor (EA) program has followed a school-based model. Since then, over 120 faculty have served as Equity Advisors in their school for, on average, over three years each. EAs have been a crucial resource in an array of recruitment, retention, and climate issues for faculty. We wholeheartedly thank the deans, faculty, and staff who have worked with and contributed generously to the program over these decades.

Equity Advisors and the Office of Inclusive Excellence have spent the last two years discussing ways to adapt and update the program so that it can best serve current faculty needs. Starting in 2025-2026, we are piloting a program that will involve an expertise-based, rather than school-based, model. Equity Advisors will be assigned focal areas such as mentoring, workload equity, or new faculty support.

This will ensure that the EA Program will:

  • provide the most needed support to faculty
  • increase equity in labor loads for EAs
  • allow for more intensive knowledge-building in specific areas of need
  • consolidate recruitment education in OIE to promote campuswide equity standards
