About the talk:
Given recent news that China’s birthrate has hit a historic low, the Chinese Communist Party has redoubled its efforts to encourage families to have more children. Urban, well-educated women have been pushing back against these demands. In this webinar, we’ll hear from a historian and a demographer on why this population crisis has emerged, why urban women are increasingly putting off marriage and pregnancy, and what we can learn when we put these trends in historical and global context.

About the speaker:
Sarah Mellors Rodriguez is an assistant professor of history at Missouri State University. Her first book, Reproductive Realities: Birth Control and Abortion in Modern China, is forthcoming from Cambridge University Press. She currently serves as the book review editor for the journal Twentieth-Century China.

Wang Feng is a professor of sociology at the University of California, Irvine where he researches comparative demographic, economic, and social processes in contemporary Chinese society. His most recent op-ed, on China’s “Three Child Policy,” was published in The New York Times in June.
