You might think that celebrities with hairstyles like dreadlocks are cool or that an American Indian costume for Halloween is stylish. But do you know that these seemingly “fashionable” looks are disrespectfully taken from different cultures?

When you claim to appreciate other cultures, have you thought about how to avoid appropriating them? Or have you ever felt that a part of your identity was being mocked or molded by social media or by your peers? Have you ever wondered when “borrowing” culture becomes “exploiting” it?

Across the Bridge: Diversity Dialogue Series is a collaboration between International Center, Cross-Cultural Center and Study Abroad Center which aims to connect international and domestics students who are interested in understanding cultural diversity issues.

We will start off the event by discussing the popular trend of culture appropriation and its impact on different cultural groups. By providing your own unique input, you will be able to hear each other’s opinions and learn from different perspectives. We welcome you to join us for lunch with an open mind and leave with new friends and new ideas.
