The Department of Gender & Sexuality Studies presents
Our Bodies Our Doctors
Featuring a Q&A with the Director
April 10, 5 – 7 PM | McCormick Screening Room
1070 Humanities Gateway
Directed by Jan Haaken, 2018, 78 minutes
The documentary tells the rarely-discussed story of what it means to be an abortion provider today: confronting threats of violence and facing intensified political threats and efforts to criminalize abortion. Religious control over health care is expanding, including in many pro-choice states. The abortion debate continues to be defined by gruesome images of the anti-abortion movement. In contrast, this film provides a crucial, hopeful point of view: an intimate glimpse into the work lives of these courageous providers and why they fight for reproductive justice.
Jan Haaken is professor emeritus of psychology at Portland State University, a clinical and community psychologist, and documentary filmmaker. Her documentaries focus on stressful jobs carried out in liminal spaces–work that has become the focus of public anxieties and controversy. She has directed six feature films, including Diamonds, Guns, and Rice, Queens of Heart: Community therapists in Drag, Mind Zone: Therapists Behind the Front Lines, Milk Men: The Life and Times of Dairy Farmers, Our Bodies Our Doctors – as well as her current film in post-production, Necessity: Oil, Wafer and Climate Resistance.
