Dear Students and Colleagues,

The “What Matters to Me and Why” series of informal discussions with respected members of our campus community continues to build on its remarkable success. Enthusiastic audiences of students, faculty and staff consistently report glowing reviews, including for our most recent speaker, UROP director Said Shokair.

The 2015-16 series concludes Wednesday, May 11, with a talk by Gregory Washington, The Stacey Nicholas Dean of Engineering. Under his leadership since August 2011, the school has increased its faculty ranks and numbers of students. He instituted a popular freshman experiential learning program that gives engineering students a taste of real-world product development. In 2015, he chaired UCI’s Task Force on Ensuring a Positive Climate for the Campus’s African American Community. A professor of mechanical engineering, he investigates smart material systems, smart electromagnetic systems and hybrid electric vehicles. He holds bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University.

“What Matters to Me and Why” encourages reflection about values, beliefs and motivations in the lives of those who shape our university. The series explores personal journeys – choices made, difficulties encountered, commitments formed and joys revealed – with the hope that these stories will help us to understand diverse pathways in life, work and leadership. Such understandings are crucial for fortifying tolerance, strengthening bonds, and supporting the virtues that make UCI a great institution.

We encourage you to join us next month to hear Dean Washington’s individual journey and unique perspectives. Please visit www.chancellor.uci.edu/whatmatters to register for the event.
