Message on Anti-Asian Discrimination ♥

Dear campus community, From coast to coast, Asian and Asian-American communities are experiencing an alarming number of acts of bias, prejudice and bigotry. From 2019 to 2020 alone, nearly 3,000 acts were reported. Orange County is no exception. Here the Human Rights Commission reports a 10-fold increase in anti-Asian incidents and crimes. These disturbing trends do not include under reported incidents of verbal harassment, spitting and other forms of intimidation and physical violence that can take place anywhere — on the street or sidewalk, in a neighborhood park, a shopping center or mall, or place of work among others. Nor…

Office of Inclusive Excellence | Inclusive Excellence and the UCI Police Department ♥ ★ ✚

To the Anteater community: We are writing to announce several actions to further align the UCI Police Department with our commitment to inclusive excellence and confronting anti-Black racism. This commitment is grounded in a community where all expect equity, support diversity, practice inclusion and honor free speech. Realizing this commitment mandates a campus police department that serves our university community according to these principles. These actions further UCI Police Department’s work to continuously improve service and relationships with the University’s diverse community and build on the recommendations of the 2019 Presidential Taskforce Report on Universitywide Policing. We are also acting…

UCI LEADERSHIP | In Support of the African American Community ♥ ★ ✚

Dear UCI Community: We watched with shock and horror the video of a white policeman callously, even casually, kneeling on the neck of an unarmed and unresisting black man until that man was dead, while other policemen stood by and watched.  This brutal and racist act was like something out of Mississippi during Jim Crow, out of the past we don’t acknowledge enough, but it wasn’t.  It is our reality, in the here and now, a reality that reflects the harsh, brutal, terrible, ongoing legacy of America’s original sin. We empathize with the pain, sadness, and anger that many Black…

GRADUATE DIVISION | A Message for the DECADE Community on Behalf of Graduate Dean Gillian Hayes ♥★✚

Dear DECADE mentors and DECADE student community, I am writing to  you today with a heavy heart and a humble request for your help in supporting our many students, post-docs, faculty, and staff who are struggling right now. As if 2020 wasn’t hard enough, this past week has pushed many past our limits. We are faced with unconscionable Anti-Black police violence and anti-Chinese xenophobia and threats to the global educational mission of ours and other universities. We know very little about the practical and logistical impacts of these activities and measures right now. What I do know, for certain, however,…

Recognizing Mentorship and Achievement at UCI ♥ ★

Dear Campus Community This spring quarter is like no other. COVID-19 has demanded more from each of us than we imagined at the start of 2020. Greater courage in the face of uncertainty; will to adjust to new learning and working conditions; and faith in the indomitable human spirit to rise to new challenges. These are the attributes of the Anteater spirit. That spirit will animate the virtual commencement later in June when thousands of undergraduates, graduates and medical students will receive their hard-earned diplomas. I want to extend my warm Congratulations to the Class of 2020! Savor this achievement….
