The US Department of Education’s Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (DHSI) Program provides grants to assist Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs)—such as UCI—to expand educational opportunities for, and improve the academic attainment of, Hispanic students. HSIs interested in applying to this grant program can use the development of their comprehensive plan to examine the alignment of their mission and current strategic plan with the needs of the target population and surrounding community to develop, enhance, and implement leadership, practice, and policies that best promote student success. DREAM Project Fellowship
Dear Campus Colleagues, UCI undocumented students—especially those without DACA—are facing a crisis. Students who lack federal work permits are unable to support themselves through employment. This is a significant detriment to the professional development of our students and puts them in financially precarious positions. The UCI DREAM Center has created an opportunity for you to help provide students with professional development and economic support—the DREAM Project Fellowship (DPF). DPF will pair undocumented fellows with campus placement sites for the 2019-2020 academic year. UCI Awarded the Dr. Juan Francisco Lara Education Award
UCI Awarded the Dr. Juan Francisco Lara Education Award UCI received the Dr. Juan Francisco Lara Education Award for 2018 from the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The award recognizes UCI’s recent designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution. This designation demonstrates UCI’s commitment to serve as an engine of social mobility for first generation and low-income students. Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Enrique Lavernia accepted the award on behalf of UCI at the OCHCC’s 25th Annual Estrella Awards Ceremony, held at the Disneyland Hotel-Grand Ballroom on April 21, 2018.
Vice Provost Michael Dennin Named Principal Investigator for NSF Grant
Led by Vice Provost Michael Dennin, UCI will convene faculty and administrators from HSI high schools, colleges and universities in Southern California for a three-day conference on the theme of Pathways for Hispanic Students in STEM. The conference, sponsored by a NSF grant, aims to identify and describe challenges facing Hispanic students who intend to pursue STEM degrees. Attendees will learn the most current research about retention of Hispanic students in STEM disciplines and will generate recommendations for designing an HSI program at NSF. Learn more here.
